Katy Esposito Long reflects on Thanksgiving through the years.
"Thanksgiving has always been a holiday wrapped in tradition. Growing up, it was a ‘Rockwellian’ affair with pressed linens, polished wine glasses, and name cards at each place setting. Over the years, my experience of Thanksgiving has evolved: from my family’s formal gathering to a football-filled Thanksgiving in Ohio, and even a tropical Thanksgiving in the Caymans. When I met my husband, we often hosted interns and friends without family nearby, welcoming them to our celebration and mixing traditions from all over.
These days, our table has become a place to nourish those we love, with a table that seats 12—a hopeful gesture for a family of two. Depending on who’s joining, I tailor the day. If it’s my parents, we have a wine journey from appetizers to dessert; if it’s the kids, I double up on the rolls and starchy sides.
If it’s just me, you’ll find me curled up on the couch watching The Godfather trilogy and stirring a garlicy red sauce. For anyone preparing the big meal, here are my go-to guidelines: brine the bird, make extra gravy, bake the stuffing outside the bird, and don’t be afraid to mix up your wine selections!
Unique Wine Pairings
Thanksgiving meals are often a medley of flavors, so having a range of wines ensures there’s something for everyone. Include whites, reds, and rosés to cater to different palates:
- Whites: Try a crisp Riesling or a lightly oaked Chardonnay to pair with turkey and creamy sides.
- Reds: A medium-bodied Pinot Noir or a fruity Beaujolais can balance the richness of stuffing and gravy.
- Rosés: A dry rosé adds a refreshing brightness to the table, pairing beautifully with lighter dishes like salads or green beans.
Go beyond the traditional wines and surprise your guests with lesser-known varietals:
- Gewürztraminer: Its floral and slightly sweet profile pairs wonderfully with spiced dishes or sweet potatoes.
- Zinfandel: A bold red with notes of jammy fruit and spice, perfect for the heartier elements of your meal.
- Sparkling Wines: Bubbles aren’t just for celebrations—they’re fantastic palate cleansers between bites.
Mixing up your wine choices adds fun and discovery to your Thanksgiving table!
